TENCI SWALLOW ME WHOLE, BLUE

Experimental indie folk quartet Tenci release stunning visuals for their song 'Swallow Me Whole, Blue', taken from last years acclaimed record A Swollen River, A Well Overflowing. The track is a gradually building swell of luscious guitars, brushed drums and saxophone lines with singer Jess Shoman's distinctively wavering voice, it is a gently beautiful but melancholic ode to a cruelly murdered pet, Shoman explains, "this song is about my mom’s childhood dog, blue, who was poisoned by the neighborhood kids shortly after my family had immigrated here from Belize". The visuals were made by film maker Faye Ruiz, who combines subtly glitching layers of footage that pixelate and form mesmerising textures and patterns, here she describes the thinking behind the visuals; “There's a strong sense of grief that runs through 'Swallow Me Whole, Blue.' It's an emotion that is both overwhelmingly palpable and yet not something that can be tamed with one's hands. In creating the visuals for the video I wanted to lean into creating visual textures that replicated this feeling. At times what you're seeing is not easy to comprehend and cannot be parsed out into singular neat images. Just like the process of grief you simply have to take it in and turn it into something you can hold onto.” A Swollen River, A Well Overflowing is out on Keeled Scales Records. -Toby Evans-Jesra
